Purpose of Project Stakeholder Management:

  1. To ensure satisfactory engagement of the stakeholders.

Issue log and Change Requests
It allows the project manager to increase support and minimize resistance from stakeholders, significantly increasing the chances to achieve project success.

Monitor Stakeholder Engagement [Monitoring and Controlling]

Work Performance Information and Change Requests
It will maintain or increase the efficiency and effectiveness of stakeholder engagement activities as the project evolves and its environment changes.

Process Description

1. Identify Stakeholders [Process / Initiating] – We identify stakeholders and understand their main expectations, interest, influences, inter-dependencies and then create Stakeholder Register.

2. Plan Stakeholder Engagement [Process / Planning] – We develop Stakeholder Engagement Plan in which we describe strategies to ensure appropriate engagement of the stakeholders.

3. Manage Stakeholder Engagement [Process / Executing] – We communicate with stakeholders and work with them so that they feel their needs are being satisfied. We address concerns before they become issues. We address issues as they arise.

4. Control Stakeholder Engagement [Process / Monitoring and Controlling] – We check whether stakeholders are properly engaged or not. 

In case of variance:
a. Find causes
b. Find corrective actions
c. Recommend it to Integrated Change Control for approval

After approval, there are 4 duties:
a. Give it to execution for implementation
b. Write approved changes in the Project Management Plan
c. Write lessons learned in OPAs
d. Inform concerned stakeholders

Stakeholder Engagement Levels:
a. Unaware – Unaware of project and potential impacts
b. Resistant – Aware of project and potential impacts and resistant to change
c. Neutral – Aware of project yet neither supportive not resistant
d. Supportive – Aware of project and potential impacts and supportive to change
e. Leading – Aware of the project and potential impacts and actively engaged in ensuring the project is a success

 

Classification Models – There are 4 classification models.
a. Power/interest grid- grouping the stakeholders on power and interest
b. Power/influence grid- grouping stakeholders on power and influence (active involvement)
c. 
Influence/impact grid- grouping stakeholder on influence (active involvement) and impact (ability to effect changes to project’s planning or execution)
d. 
Salience model- grouping stakeholders based on their power, urgency, and legitimacy.

Power = Ability to impose will
Urgency = Need for immediate action
Legitimacy = Their involvement is appropriate
