Your team is new to agile and is stumped by how to estimate their velocity for planning the first iteration. You advise them to:

    A. Use the velocity established by other agile teams in the organization
    B. Estimate based on their historical data from previous projects
    C. Make a “barely sufficient” guess to use as a starting point
    D. Determine how much of the backlog they will be able to complete

    Correct answer is D.

Agile teams estimate their velocity for the first iteration not by guessing, but by deciding how many of the top-priority items in the backlog they can commit to completing in the first iteration. The total story points for these stories becomes their starting velocity estimate. Velocity from previous projects and other teams isn’t relevant, since velocity is unique to each team and project.
